With the development and achievements of modern science, mankind has come to believe that scientists can offer an explanation for everything that exists on our planet and the universe. Let us not forget, however, that although many phenomena have scientific explanations, not all can be understood by what we know today.
For example, science has not yet given a clear answer on the process by which the universe was born. It also can not explain the formation of religious beliefs. Stepping into the supernatural, we meet mysterious events on which science has not provided any relevant clarifications as its specific methods can not be applied to measure and study these issues.
Let’s take a look at some of the unexplained phenomena, while reminding us that nature is a miracle in itself, which still holds many mysteries.
Placebo effect
The placebo effect was a medical mystery that highlighted the influence of the mind on physical health and healing. It was found that patients who believe they have received an effective medicine can cure, even if they were only given sugar pills. In order to define more clearly the phenomenon were realised studies to avoid any influence on the results sought by the participants and the experimenter’s expectations.
Unfortunately, over the years, the effectiveness and measurability of the placebo effect was considered by scientists as unreliable. This conclusion, however, may be due to limitations of research methods. There are many cases of people whose self healing sometimes exceeded the medical resources available for physical healing of the body.
The five senses – sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell – helps us to explore our physical world. There is also a sixth sense, inner power of perception, known as intuition. The word intuition comes from the Latin meaning “to look inside”. Intuition is the ability to know and understand without the use of logical reasoning or analysis and is common to all people, regardless of their level of intelligence.
Intuition is popularly called “suspicion” or ” instinct” – an insight knowledge about something without prior knowledge. According to a scientific study, 62% of company corporate executives are more likely to take business decisions based on intuition than on data analysis.
Another study in 2007, published in the scientific journal Current Biology, found that participants, when they have enough time to look and when to rely on intuition are more precise in choosing a different symbol of the other 650 identical, than when they have 1.5 seconds to look at the symbols.
The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tse said that “the power of intuitive understanding will protect you from harm until the end of your days”. Albert Einstein also stated that “the only real valuable thing is the intuition”.
But where it comes the intuition from? Studies on human brain points to the pineal gland as a possible answer to this mystery. Rene Descartes (1596-1650), the father of modern philosophy, called the pineal gland “seat of the soul”. In the ancient Orient believe that intuition is in the region of the pineal gland and it can receive illumination from the soul, in the form of knowledge and ideas.
There are numerous reports on various unusual experiences near death experiences of people like going through a tunnel toward a bright immaterial light , meeting loved ones who had already left the physical plane, a sense of calm and serenity, etc.
One of the most remarkable experiences of this kind is taken by Dr. George Rodonaia in 1976, which occurred on the border between life and death, the longest period ever recorded. The event affected Rodonaia deeply, that before was an atheist. He later became ordained priest of the Eastern Orthodox Church. What he lived indicates that there is another world beyond this physical human world.
Although many people have really gone through such unusual experiences near death, science has not been able to provide an explanation of this phenomenon. Some researchers are trying to suggest that these experiences are hallucinations of a brain injury. But brain injuries are not always present, therefore no scientific theory has not provided a valid interpretation of what is happening when and why these experiences have transformed most of the times, the life of the ones that lived them.
Unidentified flying object (UFO) is a term coined by the Air Force of the United States in 1952 to classify objects that could not be identified by experts after an investigation. In popular culture, the concept of UFO is commonly used to name a spaceship run by aliens.
UFOs have been sighted and recorded early from the Song Dynasty in China. In the eleventh century, scholar and military general Shen Kuo (1031- 1095) wrote in his book Essays from one eye of dreams (1088) about a pearl-shaped flying object with a dazzling bright interior that can move with incredible speed.
UFO testimonies are many, and their classification is beyond the scope of this article. But we will mention a few. Kenneth Arnold, an american businessman, reported that he saw a bright light objects flying near Mount Rainier, Washington, in 1947. Arnold described the objects as “flat as a pancake pan”, plate disc-shaped . The story has received significant attention from the media and attracted great public interest.
Since then, the number of UFO reports increased exponentially. UFO phenomenon has been studied worldwide as government investigators and independent investigators. Dr. Josef Allen Hynek (1910-1986) worked for the Air Force of the United States to investigate UFOs. At first, Hynek was very critical, but after examining hundreds of UFO reports over three decades, his opinion changed. In the last years of his career, Hynek expressed disappointment with the simplistic way in which most scientists analyzing UFOs, not wanting to admit strongly their unexplained nature.
Déjà vu
Déjà vu, a French term for “already seen, is a strange feeling to have been in a particular place or event before, although we were there for the first time. People can have very strange feelings of familiarity on a picture in front of them, as would have happened before, although aware they understand that this is the first time they have experienced such things. Neuropsychological investigations have attempted to explain these experiences like memory defects or cerebral pathology or side effects of certain medications.
A 2008 study conducted by psychologist Anne Cleary, concluded that feeling of déjà vu could be related to recognition memory. Alternative explanations associate déjà vu phenomenon with prophecy, memories of a previous life, clairvoyance or considers it a mystic sign indicating the fulfilling of a predetermined conditions on the road of life.
Whatever the explanation, déjà vu is certainly a universal phenomenon of the human condition and its root cause is still a mystery.
References to ghosts present in classical literature of some authors such as Homer and Dante, suggests that human experience with such paranormal phenomena is long, and in a sense, normal. Today, various haunted places such as the Whaley House in San Diego, are listed as tourist attractions, and the statements of people who have seen ghosts are not uncommon.
Popular culture is full of incidents with ghosts, but conventional science avoids explanation of such phenomena. Only some researchers, at the crossroads of the scientific community, endeavor to measure the validity of such events.
The existence of ghosts has profound implications on the dimensions of life beyond our physical world and the survival of the human soul after so-called death. Researchers who were bent on the subject hopes someday to elucidate the mystery in this field.
There are many strange cases where people have disappeared. For example, in 1937, the pilot Amelia Earhart and navigator Frederick Noonan disappeared together with Lockheed plane they were flying. When they were near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean, sent a message announcing that their plane running out of fuel, the transmission was received by the system Itasca of the American Coast Guard. But any further communication was difficult, Itasca could not locate Lockheed.
Soon after, Earhart and Noonan sent a message saying that they have fuel for only half an hour and they do not see the ground in front. Then all communication was lost. Most likely, they would have to have collapsed into the water, but after years of searching, neither pilots nor aircraft Lockheed were not found in the ocean.
In cases like this, despite all the efforts of various investigative bodies that used the most modern techniques they had, were not able to find concrete answers to what happened to people who have mysteriously disappeared.
Bermuda Triangle – the area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, where ships and planes continue to disappear – it is one of the greatest mysteries of our planet. Survivors tell of a time displacement, navigation tools not working, balls of light coming from the sky, sudden and inexplicable violent weather or fog walls.
Frank Flynn, in 1956, while sailing in the Bermuda Triangle has encountered an “unknown mass of fog that spilled the engine power, after the ship has entered it.
In 1970, Bruce Gernon Jr. met such a kind of fog that has enveloped the plane and transported him into something otherworldly.
Over the years, scientists have tried to demystify the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, claiming even that actually there is no mystery. But those who have directly experienced some strange events and survived to tell them, firmly states that what is happening in the Bermuda Triangle is beyond logical understanding.
Yeti
Yeti is one of the most famous creatures of cryptozoology studies. Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, as it is called in North America, is known as the Yeti or the Snow Man in Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet, and the Yowie in Australia.
In 1951, mountaineer Eric Shipton photographed a giant footprint in the Himalayas. The photo scared people and made popular the story of Yeti. In 1967, Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin showed footage where appeared something they claimed to be Yeti. Their images become famous, have undergone many trials and demythisation authentication.
Anthropologist Grover Krantz examined the Patterson-Gimlin film and concluded that it is a genuine film of unknown bipedal creature, very large. Due to lack of physical evidence proving the existence of the Yeti, conventional science does not support claims of existence. However, the myth persists as new stories which sustain was seen, were reported worldwide.
The occurrence of persistent noise, of low frequency, has been reported in many places around the world, especially in USA, UK and Northern Europe. The sound that is not heard by all people, is known simply as “hum”, or with the name of the village where it sounds, like Hum Taos (New Mexico), Hum Kokomo (Indiana) hum Bristol (England) and Largs hum (Canada).
For those who can perceive the sound is often described as a diesel engine rumbling in the distance. It caused extreme stress to some people, negative side effects that disrupt normal living.
Governments around the world have investigated the source of the hum. In the United States, investigations began in the 1960s. In 2003, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK published a report analyzing the low frequency hum and its impact on those who can hear it. However, results of the source identification of the buzzing have been elusive, and the phenomenon remains a mystery.
