The UNESCO heritage Mureș is a county of Romania in the historical center of Transylvania, its administrative center being Târgu-Mureș. Its total area is 6,714 km2, and the main river crossing the county is the Mures river, but two other rivers also cross it: Tarnava Mare and Tarnava Mica. The county is bordered by high mountains: Calimani and Gurghiu mountains, the sub-Carpathian hills. The city lies on the Mures River, that is why in each language its name is related to this river (Targu-Mures, Marosvásárhely, Neumarkt am Mieresch) and the first known recorded documentation of the city dates back to 1332.
