What to know about Mureș county in Romania

The UNESCO heritage Mureș is a county of Romania in the historical center of Transylvania, its administrative center being Târgu-Mureș. Its total area is 6,714 km2, and the main river crossing the county is the Mures river, but two other rivers also cross it: Tarnava Mare and Tarnava Mica. The county is bordered by high mountains: Calimani and Gurghiu mountains, the sub-Carpathian hills. Since the county is part of the Transylvanian Plateau, there are a lot of deep and wide valleys also worth visiting.

 The county was established in 1968 following the administrative reorganization of the country and thus reintroducing the historical county system (in Romanian: “județ”). This system is still used today. The county is rich in geographical resources, wonderful places to visit, beautiful spots for entertainment and relaxation.

Mures county is inhabited by Romanians, Hungarians, Saxons, and other nationalities, which enrich the cultural heritage of this region of the county. The administrative center of Mures county

Being the seat of Mures county in the historical region of Transylvania, Tirgu-Mures is the 16th largest city of Romania with 135000 inhabitants of different ethnicities among which the most important are the Romanian, Hungarian and Roma. The city lies on the Mures River, that is why in each language its name is related to this river (Targu-Mures, Marosvásárhely, Neumarkt am Mieresch) and the first known recorded documentation of the city dates back to 1332.

The most visited tourist destinations, popular spots of the town are: the fortress of the town, the Teleki-Bolyai Library, the Old City Hall, the Palace of Culture, several old churches and squares and the very popular zoo.
